Jhum field in Hmar Hills
[caption id="attachment_694" align="aligncenter" width="520"] Shifting cultivation is the most prevalent form of cultivation in Hmar Hills. Villagers would clear a track of land by slashing the forest after which it is set on fire to get the land ready for cultivation. The cycle continues year after year and it has resulted in extensive damage of forest. Yet, with no other alternative on hand to support their families, villagers are forced to depend on this method of cultivation. In this photo, you can see maize and rice being cultivated by one farmer in Parvachawm village, Hmar Hills, Manipur. Photo contributed by: Lts Tusing[/caption]
